Message from VIC Branch Secretary: Members take action

April 1, 2025

The 2024 WorkSafe Awards was a night to remember! Over 400 attendees gathered to celebrate 21 outstanding finalists in WHS. We’re incredibly proud of our very own Danny Humphrey, a former Qenos worker and current AWU Organiser, who was recognised as a finalist for his exceptional work as a Health and Safety Representative.

Congratulations to Danny and all the honourees who have championed safer workplaces or shown remarkable courage in their return-to-work journeys!

The AWU proudly sponsored the 2025 Clunes Quick Shear in February, an event that resonates deeply with our union’s rich history. Our story began in 1886 when 38 shearers gathered in a Ballarat pub, laying the foundation for what would become one of Australia’s most significant labour movements. While the AWU has evolved over our 139-year history, we remain deeply rooted in the traditions that first brought us together. The Clunes Quick Shear celebrates the skill, tradition, and community spirit that define our union.

Across Victoria’s summer months, our Forest Fire Management AWU Victoria members have battled well over 80 blazes, protecting communities and preserving our natural landscapes. While Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan acknowledged the critical work of emergency services, we know that words alone are not enough to support these incredible workers.

Our members are doing far more than can be captured by a simple “thank you.” They’re risking their lives, missing family dinners, and protecting communities while facing challenging conditions day in, day out.

That’s why members are currently undertaking protected industrial action, which includes refusing to clear rubbish at dump sites as part of ongoing enterprise agreement negotiations. We won’t give up in the fight for a fair pay rise!

Finally, the Victorian Branch hosted a successful International Women’s Day celebration on Friday, March 7. The event featured distinguished guest speakers The Honourable Clare O’Neil MP and The Honourable Natalie Hutchins MP. Members, supporters and friends of the AWU gathered for this casual social function, which was an excellent opportunity for attendees to connect with like-minded individuals and celebrate International Women’s Day together. Thanks everyone for coming!
