The AWU Training department is committed to providing our Delegates and HSRs with the tools needed to fulfil their roles to the best of their ability. Delegate and HSR training is available throughout the year. Our team provides experience and support in both Delegate and OHS Training, and is available for further assistance if required.

Courses

Foundations of an Active Union

Who it’s for: First-time delegates and active union members.

This course is designed to educate delegates with strong foundational knowledge about their role and how to actively perform it.

Duration: 2 days.

Delegates 2 and Delegates 3: Building a Strong Union

Who it’s for: Delegates who have completed Foundations of an Active Union.

This course builds on Foundations of an Active Union and further develops participants’ skills and knowledge.

Duration: 2 days.

Bargaining and Negotiating Skills

Who it’s for: AWU members, delegates and workplace representatives preparing for enterprise agreement negotiations, working through workplace disputes, or advocating on individual member matters.

This two-day course equips participants with the practical skills and confidence needed to negotiate effectively on behalf of their colleagues. Strong bargaining skills make the difference between an average outcome and a great one, and this course builds the capability to sit across the table from employers and secure the best possible results for AWU members.

Duration: 2 days.

Delegates Refresher

Who it’s for: Senior delegates who have completed Advanced Delegates Training.

This yearly refresher provides senior delegates with the opportunity to revise and further develop their skills. It includes updates on changes throughout the year to legislation and EEO.

Duration: 1 day.

2026 HSR Initial OHS Training Course

Who it’s for: Newly elected Health and Safety Representatives.

This WorkSafe Victoria-approved introductory course provides HSRs with the basic skills and information to represent members on OHS matters. Under Section 67(3)(c) of the Victorian OHS Act 2004, elected HSRs are entitled to attend an approved training course chosen by the HSR in consultation with their employer.

Duration: 5 days.

Cost: $1,000 per person, payable by employer.

The AWU encourages all HSRs to attend training delivered by their union.

2026 HSR Refresher OHS Training Course

Who it’s for: HSRs who have completed their Initial 5-Day Training and are attending their annual refresher.

The Victorian OHS Act entitles elected HSRs to attend Annual OHS Refresher training. These WorkSafe-approved modular courses provide HSRs with the opportunity to revise current OHS knowledge and further develop skills in identifying and controlling workplace hazards. Under Section 67(3)(c) of the Victorian OHS Act 2004, elected HSRs have the right to attend an approved training course with a provider of their choice in consultation with their employer.

Participants should specify which module they are applying for:

  • HSR Refresher OHS Training Course: Plant
  • HSR Refresher OHS Training Course: Psychological Health

Duration: 1 day per module.

Cost: $450 per person, payable by employer.
