Australian Workers Union calls for local manufacturing and jobs

March 6, 2024

The Australian Workers Union Victoria welcomes the recent decision by the Albanese Government to establish an offshore wind zone in the Southern Ocean off Warrnambool, marking a pivotal moment in Victoria’s journey towards a clean energy future.

While the union expresses surprise at the removal of areas west of the declared zone. AWU Victoria Secretary Ronnie Hayden acknowledges the importance of this step and stresses the need for government support to secure local jobs and continue the nation’s proud manufacturing history.

“This represents a positive move forward, yet it is crucial for the government’s support to ensure the preservation of local jobs and the continuation of our nation’s longstanding manufacturing legacy,” says AWU Victoria Secretary Ronnie Hayden.

The AWU sees the offshore wind project as an excellent opportunity to showcase Australia’s strength in the manufacturing sector to the world. Mr Hayden emphasised the union’s commitment to supporting Australian-made products and believes that this project can highlight the country’s strength in the manufacturing space.

The AWU believes an essential component of gaining community support for the offshore wind projects is the assurance and accountability of providing high-quality, secure jobs and benefits to local economies. The union is determined to hold the government accountable for delivering on the promise of community benefits and ensuring the project contributes positively to the local and national economy.

“We must rally behind Australian-made products, and the AWU sees this as a significant opportunity to demonstrate the strength and potential of our manufacturing sector to the world,” adds Hayden.

Feasibility licence applications for offshore wind projects in the Southern Ocean zone will be open from March 6 to July 2, 2024. The AWU urges the government to prioritise local jobs and manufacturing during this crucial phase.

The AWU views this declaration as a significant step towards fostering regional job opportunities, ensuring energy security, and creating sustainable, high-value local jobs. The union remains committed to working collaboratively with the government, industry representatives, and community groups to ensure the success of the offshore wind project and the prosperity of the region.
