OHS Concerns at Viva

AWU has concerns about the safety at Viva Energy after an explosion at the Corio refinery last week. Local residents reported hearing an “explosion” and a “mushroom cloud.” No-one was injured in the incident.

AWU Victorian Branch Secretary Ben Davis said Viva needs urgent improvements before someone is hurt. “The AWU has been raising concerns with WorkSafe about the refinery for the last three years and the response has been inadequate. In fact, the AWU had raised concerns with WorkSafe three days before the explosion and it was glossed over. These are worker’s lives on the line, it can’t be glossed over. We don’t want another Longford explosion.”
