QLD Members stand strong, win big!

October 7, 2025

Across Queensland, AWU members are proving that standing together in unity delivers real results. Through protected industrial action and unwavering resolve, members are securing the pay and conditions they deserve.

2025 is proving to be a landmark year for AWU members in Queensland Health, winning real gains in tough circumstances. In the face of a conservative government that has shown little respect for their work, AWU nurses, including those at Bailie Henderson Hospital, took industrial action to force Queensland Health back to the table. Their unity and determination paid off as they secured an 11% pay rise and won double time for overtime.

Rockhampton Hospital says no to outsourcing!

AWU operational health workers have shown real strength. Through workplace meetings, petitions and packed ballot meetings, members have made it clear they are ready to stand up for secure, direct employment. That unity is paying off. Queensland Health has now put an offer on the table that would strengthen outsourcing protections. This is significant shift only happened because members stood firm together. By staying organised and united, workers have forced movement from an LNP government. The AWU will always stand up for secure jobs and deliver good outcomes. Members will decide the next steps, and their union will be there every step of the way.

The AWU is also fighting hard to ensure that all of our members working in the HPDO sector within Queensland Health get an EBA that recognises the vital role they play in our health system.

Following massive strike action that saw hundreds of outdoor staff walk off the job, AWU members at Townsville City Council have successfully pushed management to return to the table with a much-improved offer. Last week, AWU Delegates reached an in-principle agreement with TCC management with:

• An 11% wage increase

• A 3% increase in years two and three, with a CPI adjuster up to 3.5%.

• Backpay to the 1st of July 2024.

This fantastic result would not have been possible without the unity and resolve shown by every member. A special thanks must go to the incredible AWU delegates who have led this campaign from the front. Your leadership has been instrumental in achieving this outcome.

Townsville City Council workers secure huge win

After a tough negotiation period that saw members take protected industrial action for the first time in more than 40 years, Southern Downs Regional Council workers have secured a major victory. Council initially offered a deal that would have sent our members backward.

But through their strength and unity, workers fought back and won a great deal that properly recognises their hard work and dedication. This outcome is a testament to the power of collective action and shows what can be achieved when members stand shoulder to shoulder. Congratulations to all involved!
