Update: New Initiatives for the AWU & Modest Fee Increase July 2019

June 24, 2019

At the 2019 National Conference, delegates from across the country met to discuss future initiatives for the union. Delegates spoke in favour of building a fairer Union, where those who are paid the least pay the lowest fees – and vice versa.

At Conference, there was also support for a new website to deliver a more personalised experience, industry-specific campaigns to give a national platform to members fighting for change, and a new honours system to acknowledge those who should be recognised for the hard work they put in for our Union.

There was also discussion of a member protection fund, to give members more power when taking the fight to employers via industrial action, and much more.

It’s important that AWU members get more bang for their buck. In the future, we are looking at ways to get members discounts on everyday purchases through services like member advantage. This will hopefully ease cost of living and leave more money in members’ pocket.

These initiatives are in the works at the moment and we will be rolling them out over the next few months. Union members make a huge contribution and deserve to get back even more for that contribution. Please keep an eye out and get involved so that we can continue to be a bigger, bolder and better Union.

A SMALL FEE INCREASE

At the National Conference, AWU conference delegates passed a motion to implement a modest fee increase commencing 1st July 2019.

This decision was made to ensure that members continue to be provided with the highest level of representation, support and service.

The new weekly membership rates are as follows:

Standard (Full Time)       $12.50
Oil & Gas/Offshore         $15.50
Rebate (Part Time)          $9.10
Junior/Apprentice           $6.25
(all other rates will be increased by the same percent as the full-time amount).

Increasing fees is never a decision we take lightly, and this is the most reasonable increase we could introduce at this time.

We know this change will impact our lowest paid members the most and we are actively working towards making sure these members can continue to afford membership of their union.

There are a lot of exciting changes coming and we want our members to be as involved as possible. Ongoing updates will be sent as these initiatives are rolled out.
