Celebrating Women’s Achievements in the AWU: Vanessa Garbett’s Inspiring Journey on International Women’s Day

March 8, 2024

As the world marks International Women’s Day, we spotlight Vanessa Garbett, a seasoned electrician and devoted member of the Australian Workers’ Union. Vanessa’s story encapsulates her 35-year career as an electrician and 12 years as an electrical inspector, along with her steadfast advocacy for women in the male-dominated electrical trade.

Vanessa’s career began with the allure of stability and a decent income, dedicating 35 years to a profession traditionally dominated by men.

Originally a member of the Electrical Trades Union, Vanessa transitioned to the Australian Workers’ Union during her time at ESV. The AWU’s robust representation and dedication during their initial EBA negotiations resonated with Vanessa, prompting her to become an active member.

Approaching International Women’s Day, Vanessa reflects on its significance as a female union member in a male-dominated field. “I have always worked in male-dominated environments. IWD is important to pay respect and remember the struggles of women globally and acknowledge those who have come before us and their contribution,” Vanessa shares.

Vanessa suggests that the union, particularly the AWU, can better support women by integrating them into all aspects of the organisation. Encouraging women to become delegates and providing necessary support are crucial steps towards fostering a strong union with women represented at every level.

Taking pride in advocating for women throughout her career, Vanessa has fostered a supportive environment for her female colleagues in the male-dominated electrical trade. Acknowledging the challenges of gender discrimination, she remains resilient, determined to overcome obstacles that come with working in the industry.

Throughout her journey, Vanessa has had mentors and role models who guided her, inspiring her to mentor others. Emphasising the importance of support networks for women in the workplace, Vanessa highlights the positive impact they can have on retaining women in their roles.

On this International Women’s Day, Vanessa Garbett’s story stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of women in the electrical industry. Her dedication to her profession and advocacy for women’s representation underscore the ongoing need for gender equality and inclusivity in the workforce. Today, we celebrate not just Vanessa but all the women in the AWU who continue to break barriers and pave the way for a more inclusive future.
