Racing at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships

February 15, 2024

In a display of perseverance and determination, Simon Miller, a triathlete and representative of Australia, participated in the IRONMAN 70.3 2023 World Championships held in Lahti, Finland. Our industrial officer Simon shares his experience, the challenges he faced, and the support he received from the AWU throughout his triathlon journey.

Simon’s journey to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships was not without hurdles. Battling through shoulder surgeries and multiple hospitalisations, he emphasised the importance of acknowledging that rehabilitation takes time. Simon committed himself fully to the process, seeking guidance from professionals and drawing strength from the unwavering support of family, friends, coaches, and training buddies.

Race day brought both excitement and unexpected challenges for Simon. The opening ceremony, where athletes marched behind their country’s flag, set the stage for a memorable event.

However, heavy rain on the challenging bike course and leg cramping during the run added complexity to Simon’s race. Despite these difficulties, Simon pushed through, finishing the championship and embodying the spirit of resilience.

Simon’s strategic approach to each leg of the race showcased his experience and determination. From finding rhythm in the swim to maintaining consistent power on the bike’s rolling hills and holding back early on the run, Simon’s race-day tactics reflected his dedication to the sport.

For Simon, representing Australia at the international level was an immense honour. Walking around Lahti Stadium with fellow Australians behind the national flag brought into sharp focus the magnitude of his achievement and the opportunity to compete among the world’s best triathletes.

Participating in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships provided Simon with valuable insights. The importance of thorough preparation, both physically and mentally, was reinforced. Additionally, being part of a global triathlon community inspired him to stay involved in the sport and continue pursuing excellence.

Simon expressed deep gratitude for the support of the Australian Workers Union, highlighting their role in providing flexibility for rehabilitation and training around work commitments. The AWU’s support played a crucial role in Simon’s journey to the championships.

As Simon reflects on his triathlon career, he looks forward to racing at IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne. Beyond that, he plans to prioritise rest and recovery. To fellow athletes facing setbacks, Simon offers a simple yet powerful message: “Those who persevere, conquer!”

Congratulations on your achievement Simon!
