AWU Secures Victory in Ad Standards Complaint Against Hungry Jacks

November 14, 2023

In a recent win for the Australian Workers’ Union Victoria, the Ad Standards Community Panel upheld complaints against a Hungry Jack’s advertisement, marking a significant triumph for the union’s dedication to health and safety. The complaint was submitted after an AWU member and Traffic Controller had seen the advert and raised concerns on the lax attitude of road safety and traffic control.

The advertisement in question portrayed a scenario where a driver, distracted by a passenger eating a burger, narrowly avoids a collision with a road worker. The AWU, representing a diverse group of workers, raised concerns about the portrayal of unsafe driving practices, emphasizing the serious nature of such behaviour, particularly for those in high-risk professions.

Upon a thorough review, the Ad Standards Community Panel found a breach of Section 2.6 of the AANA Code of Ethics, specifically related to health and safety. The concerns expressed by the complainants were acknowledged, highlighting the panel’s commitment to upholding community standards regarding road safety.

Hungry Jack’s responded to the complaints by emphasizing the slow speed of the vehicle, responsible driving behaviour, and the intention to convey a message about concentration and forgiveness. However, the Ad Standards Panel concluded that the light-hearted depiction of driver inattention contradicted prevailing community standards on road safety.

The Ad Standards Community Panel’s decision served as a victory for the AWU, reinforcing the union’s dedication to ensuring the safety of workers and the public. By addressing concerns about the advertisement’s potential to trivialise dangerous situations, the AWU successfully advocated for responsible advertising practices.

This success underscores the importance of holding advertisers accountable for promoting responsible and safe behaviour in their campaigns.
