Artistry and Solidarity: Danny Humphrey’s Inspiring Journey as an AWU Member and Artist

October 3, 2023

In the world of art, every brushstroke, every note, and every sculpture tells a story. Meet Danny Humphrey, an Australian Workers Union member whose artistic journey is deeply entwined with his commitment to workers’ rights and the values of unity and solidarity.

Danny’s artistic story began during his teenage years, with music as his primary outlet for creative expression. While he held a fascination for various art mediums like paint, timber, and steel, access to these materials was limited until he reached working age. His first job as a signwriting apprentice offered a window into design and large-format printing, yet it was the fading art of traditional hand-painted signwriting that truly captivated him.

In pursuit of a trade, Danny joined the Royal Australian Navy, temporarily setting aside his artistic dreams. It wasn’t until after his naval service that he rekindled his passion for art. He dove into painting and began crafting with timber and steel, embracing the art he held dear. Today, as a Process Technician and AWU Delegate at a Polyethylene Manufacturing Plant, he enjoys workplace conditions that afford him the time and resources to nurture his artistic talents.

Danny firmly believes that art is a potent tool for workers to convey their diverse experiences and stories. It serves as a medium for education, idea exchange, and shining a spotlight on the struggles and triumphs of the working class. Art can play a pivotal role in advancing workers’ movements, educating the public, and celebrating hard-fought victories.

Danny’s submitted artwork for the “We Are Union” theme carries a compelling message of unity and solidarity. His piece symbolises that when working people unite globally, they can shatter the chains of oppression and achieve dignity, respect, and peace through the strength of unions and solidarity.

Danny’s artwork embodies the core values and mission of the Australian Workers Union. It stands as a testament to the union’s unwavering fight for workplace safety, fair wages and conditions, job security, and the dignity and respect of all workers. The symbolism within his piece directly mirrors the tireless efforts of AWU members and officials across the country.

Membership in the AWU has profoundly enriched Danny’s perspective as an artist. It has provided him with an invaluable education, learning from a diverse range of AWU members and officials. These experiences have instilled in him the values of a proud unionist, shaping his art to reflect strong union principles and the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights.

Creating his prize-worthy artwork presented unique challenges. Danny accompanied his painting with a poem, artfully guiding viewers through the symbolism woven into the artwork. The piece’s substantial size and weight demanded a freestanding timber frame to ensure stability when displayed at Paddy’s Gallery in Trades Hall.

Danny’s hope is that his art inspires people, reminding them that progress springs from determination and action. He firmly believes it reinforces the idea that true solidarity among workers can lead to victory. This solidarity starts in workplaces and extends to workers worldwide.

Participating in an event that celebrates both art and workers’ contributions to society is an immense honor for Danny. His artwork, displayed alongside other remarkable pieces, showcases the unique blend of creativity and commitment that defines the AWU and the broader union movement. It makes art accessible to all, echoing the values of unity and solidarity at the heart of the “We Are Union” theme.
