Backing Workers in the Bush

March 9, 2026

In February, NSW Labor held its annual Country Conference in Orange. Delegates, unionists and ministers gathered from across NSW to debate policy reflective of the regions.

The AWU NSW branch made one thing clear; we were born in the bush, and we will always fight for the regions.

The branch submitted motions that received broad support from the conference and are now in the Country Labor policy platform.

We secured support for reforming the PALM visa scheme to end employer-tied exploitation, including job portability and guaranteed hours. Protecting migrant workers protects wages and conditions for all workers in regional NSW.

We won backing to extend compassionate leave to five days per occasion, broaden the definition of family, and ensure casual workers aren’t left behind. Two days simply does not reflect the real impact that death or serious illness can have on an individual and their family. Grief does not operate on a roster, and working people should not be forced to choose between mourning a loved one or secure employment.

A key focus for the AWU was the future of Tomago Aluminium. Our motion recognised Tomago’s critical role in the Hunter and called on governments to urgently secure a viable long-term solution. While recent federal support has been welcomed, negotiations are not yet complete.

During debate on the Economic Future chapter, I delivered the right of reply to the NSW Treasurer, where I commended him for his willingness to support Tomago Aluminium.

Tony addresses NSW Country Conference

Despite the positive policy wins at Conference, I cannot advocate for workers without calling out the NSW Government’s workers compensation reforms passed this month.

Regional workers must not be an afterthought. Those in the bush already face higher workplace risks and greater barriers to accessing medical treatment and rehabilitation. When supports are cut, it’s country workers who are hit first and hardest.

We will continue to call on the NSW Government to correct these changes and ensure injured workers get the support they deserve.
