Celebrating AWU Life Members: Winter 2025

Ian Thomas joined the NSW Branch of the AWU on the 30th of November 1986 and built a career spanning more than 35 years in the glass industry.

During Ian’s time in the glass industry he worked at Glass Containers, OI Glass, and Visy Glass Penrith. Over that time, he played an active and consistent role in representing his workmates – first as a shift delegate, then as senior delegate onsite.

Ian’s commitment extended well beyond his own workplace. He served on the Glass Workers Executive, the Greater NSW Executive, and later the NSW Branch Executive.

His extensive industry knowledge and practical experience made him a respected voice in national EBA negotiations and local

dispute resolution.

Ian was known among his peers as someone who showed up, whether it was for a bargaining meeting, a site issue, or just a workmate who needed advice. His approach was steady, considered, and always focused on getting the best outcome for members.

His Life Membership recognises not only his years of service, but also the positive impact he had on his workplace and union community.

The AWU is stronger for the contribution Ian has made across decades of quiet, determined unionism. Thank you, Ian, for your dedication to our mighty union!
