AWU WA International Women’s Day Event

March 11, 2021

On International Women’s Day the AWU WA Branch’s very own Alice Fitzgerald and Secretary Brad Gandy hosted our International Women’s Day Sundowner.

Our union is full of strong and passionate women who are leaders within the union movement. The AWU’s National President Marina Chambers and AWU WA Branch’s Vice-President Dee Solly provide our union with strong direction and leadership.

The AWU has a proud history of strong union women including one of our most famous female members in Dame Mary Gilmore, a poet and writer, who contributed to The Australian Worker (the forerunner to the AWU newspaper ‘The Workers’). Dame Mary campaigned for maternity allowances, child health centres, the rights of the aged and infirm, and many other social issues of 1908 – and is now considered to be one of Australia’s legendary unionists.

Today, you can find Dame Mary Gilmore on Australia’s ten-dollar note.

We honour Dame Mary Gilmore’s legacy through our ongoing commitment to equity and the right for all Australians to work without discrimination on any basis.

A special thank you must go out to all the hard working female members, delegates and leaders of our union including those who attended and those who #choosetochallenge in their workplace every day keeping our union strong.

Thank you to Maurice Blackburn Lawyers for sponsoring the event and for the quality legal advice Gemma Taylor and her team provide to AWU members daily.

Last but not least, thank you to former trade union official and the first woman to be elected as the President of the Legislative Council in WA, Hon Kate Doust MLC for sharing her knowledge and practical organising experience with our members.

Women make our union strong.
