Parental Leave for Dads

PARENTAL LEAVE FOR DADS

It’s 2025 and every parent can take parental leave – not just mums.

AWU members often ask our Organisers; “Can I take parental leave as a dad?”

The answer is yes you can. As a dad you can apply for paid and/or unpaid parental leave:

PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

  • Government payment available through Services Australia.
  • Total entitlement of up to 120 paid days per family.
  • Superannuation contributions will also apply from 1 July 2025 on this paid parental leave entitlement.
  • You need to meet the eligibility requirements and be on leave from work.
  • Click here for more information and how to apply.

UNPAID PARENTAL LEAVE

  • Entitlement under the Fair Work Act.
  • Entitlement to 12 months’ unpaid leave, with the possibility of extension. This can be taken in one continuous period, or flexibly.
  • You need to give your employer 10 weeks’ notice, and make sure you meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Click here for more information and how to apply.

Always check your Enterprise Agreement, relevant Modern Award & Employment contract/company policy in case they provide more generous parental leave entitlements.

No harm in asking: your employer can’t sack you, or treat you differently, for asking for any kind of leave. This includes parental leave.

Still unsure? Reach out to your organiser at the AWU if you want to chat about parental leave and join the AWU today for a better deal at work by clicking here.

    Super Power the Pacific

All workers who come to Australia deserve the same dignity in retirement as Australians. But PALM workers on our farms and in our abattoirs, who already face exploitation and abuse, are routinely let down by the settings of Superannuation for migrant workers.
