Thank you for Standing Strong!

December 17, 2025

2025 has been a year that proved exactly why being in the AWU matters. Across Queensland, workers have faced enormous pressure — from an LNP government intent on weakening job security protections in public health, to councils stripping back conditions while pushing rates higher, to multinational giants walking away from the very communities they rely on. In every one of these fights, AWU members stood together, built power, and won outcomes that delivered fairness, security, and dignity at work.

For the first time in decades, AWU members bargained with an LNP state government. During EB12 negotiations, Queensland Health tried to scrap outsourcing protections. Members launched a statewide campaign, winning support from thousands of Queenslanders. As industrial action loomed, the government backed down. Outsourcing protections were preserved, wages improved, and stronger night shift penalties were secured. This was a major win, but the fight continues — the next agreement in 2028 will be critical.

Council workers across Queensland faced attempts to cut conditions as rates soared. In Noosa, members defeated lockouts and secured a 15% wage increase. In Southern Downs, workers took action for the first time in 40 years, winning a 15% pay rise and blocking forced Sunday work. The Ipswich Civic Centre agreement has taken a huge step forward, and members will receive back pay from 1 July 2025. In Townsville, council members fought a dodgy wage offer and won $125 per week pay rises plus stronger job security. Across the state, AWU council workers showed that when they stand together, they win.

Noosa Regional Council workers take action!

When Glencore announced plans to close the Mount Isa Smelter and Townsville Refinery, thousands of jobs were at risk. AWU members and officials launched a major campaign to secure government support. After sustained pressure, State and Federal governments delivered a support package that saved the smelter and locked in tens of thousands of jobs across the region. Once again, the AWU proved its commitment to regional Queensland and the industries that sustain communities and we won.

Members at NRG in CQ had a massive win securing a 9.5% wage uplift in the first year then 4% p.a. thereafter and superannuation paid at 2% higher than the SG! This year also saw massive wins with the team at Contract Resources. Over the last 12 months, workers achieved wage increases of up to 28% and saw uplifts in classifications for the majority of crews. These outcomes weren’t handed over — they were fought for and won by standing together under the AWU banner. There we so many more battles though, and more wins than we can count. All tremendous examples of members building workplace power to collectivise and win.

As we wrap up this year, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the workers on the front line — from theme parks to hospitality to health to councils and beyond — every worker that keeps things running during the busy Christmas and New Year period. Thanks for all your efforts and contributions and for showing once again the incredible strength and spirit of Queensland workers.
