AWU Aged Care Update | Federal Government Lets Aged Care Workers Down

AWU Aged Care Update | Federal Government Lets Aged Care Workers Down

Last week, we learned that the Federal Government and Aged Care providers left the aged care sector unprepared and under resourced for the job of caring for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a special report, the Royal Commission into Aged Care found that government actions were “insufficient” to prepare the aged care sector for challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While not surprising, these findings make it clear just how important it is that we fix our aged care system.

The AWU is fighting to secure a better deal for aged care workers.

Now more than ever, we need an aged care system that looks after workers and the people they care for instead of simply creating huge profits for bosses.

We need employers and the Federal Government to deliver:

  1. Decent wages
  2. Proper staff numbers
  3. Job Security
  4. Fair Rostering
  5. Training and equipment

There’s never been a more important time to be a member of the AWU.

The only way we can win a better deal at work is by standing together.

To help join our campaign for a better deal for aged care workers, speak to a non-member about joining the AWU today.

    Maurice Blackburn Settlement Story

Jayden* was employed as a sheet metal worker for a duct installation company when he sustained a serious hand injury while installing an upright duct into the roof of a new shopping centre development. He and his colleagues ordinarily undertook work of this nature in pairs, due to the weight of the metal ducts and the difficulty of the upright installation. On this particular worksite, however, Jayden’s boss directed them to work individually in order to meet a deadline.
