Smelter Deal A Win for Queensland Workers

 

Today’s announcement locking in the future of the Mount Isa Mines Copper Smelter is a massive win for local Queensland AWU members.

The AWU has fought hard to support the smelter because we know how important it is to back in local jobs and industry.

It supports hundreds of workers in Mount Isa and Townsville and local AWU members have repeatedly made it clear just how critical its future is.

We’ve been calling on Glencore and the Queensland State Government to commit to the Smelter for months and it’s great to see everyone involved do the right thing by local workers and support its ongoing operation.

It’s never been more important to have good, secure local jobs and industry, and keeping the Mount Isa Mines Smelter running long into the future is a critical part of making this happen.
