AWU Statement on Brisbane Youth Detention Centre COVID-19 Case

21st August 2020

The AWU is aware that an employee at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre has returned a positive COVID-19 test.
As the union representing Youth Detention workers, we’re taking urgent steps to protect our members on the ground.

As soon as we became aware, the AWU immediately contacted the Department of Youth Justice to make sure every precaution is being taken to keep workers safe.

We understand that affected employees have been contacted and sent home for further testing, contact tracing is underway and that the relevant sections are being properly cleaned.

We’ve also received a commitment that any staff required to stand down will be covered by pandemic leave and will not be financially disadvantaged.

We know that this is a stressful time and we’d urge any members who are concerned about their health or safety to reach out to the union.

Most importantly, we’re calling on any staff who are unwell or think they might have been exposed to a COVID-19 case to immediately get tested and stay home.

If you have any questions or concerns, speak to your AWU Delegate or Organiser today.
