AWU Statement – On Ardent Leisure Charges

21st July 2020

News today that charges have been laid against Ardent Leisure for the tragic deaths of Cindy Low, Kate Goodchild, Luke Dorsett and Roozi Araghi sends a powerful message that worker safety is too important not to take seriously.

Revelations about Dreamworlds appalling safety culture have never come as a surprise to the AWU, with safety concerns raised by our members and officials repeatedly falling on deaf ears.

We’ve heard from countless AWU members about a work environment that consistently put profit ahead of safety.

The AWU battled for years to force Ardent Leisure to address these issues – unfortunately management simply wasn’t willing to make worker safety a priority.

Our thoughts today are with the families, loved ones, and workmates of Cindy, Kate, Luke and Roozi, and the many other Dreamworld employees affected by this tragedy.

No family should ever have to go through what these families have again.

Be a part of our community.

Join the AWU.

Stronger together.

    Maurice Blackburn Settlement Story

Jayden* was employed as a sheet metal worker for a duct installation company when he sustained a serious hand injury while installing an upright duct into the roof of a new shopping centre development. He and his colleagues ordinarily undertook work of this nature in pairs, due to the weight of the metal ducts and the difficulty of the upright installation. On this particular worksite, however, Jayden’s boss directed them to work individually in order to meet a deadline.
