Cassowary Coast Regional Council Agreement Finalised

December 3, 2019

The Australian Workers’ Union says after two years of tough bargaining negotiations, the new workplace Agreement at Cassowary Coast Council has now been finalised.

AWU Far Northern District Secretary Dave Hearse said the union had fought hard to protect a number of working conditions that the Council had tried to erode in the Agreement.

“AWU members are the face of Council – they’re the ones on the ground delivering services for Cassowary Coast residents and ratepayers,” Dave said.

“They’re the ones looking after local roads and maintaining our public spaces.

“They deserve to be treated with respect by Council.

“That’s why the union has fought hard during bargaining negotiations.

“It was clear that the Council wasn’t keen to negotiate a new Agreement in the initial stages when the AWU first served the notice back in 2017, and had to be dragged to the bargaining table.

“AWU members stood together to make their position heard – even resorting to industrial action.

“While the Agreement has now been finalised, the AWU will continue to push for a fair go for members at Cassowary Coast Council.”
