AWU Calls For Thorough Investigation Into Workplace Death

06 March 2008

The AWU expresses its deepest sympathies to the family of the man killed after being dragged into a street sweeper in Grantville near Phillip Island earlier today, AWU State Secretary Cesar Melhem said.

"We are devastated for this man's family, who expected him to return home today and who instead now have to deal with this awful tragedy," Mr Melhem said.

He said the AWU would be holding a meeting tomorrow of its members at Primal Servicing, for whom the man worked.

"Our members are simply shattered by the loss of their workmate," Mr Melhem said.

"We are calling for a thorough investigation of this incident to find out what went wrong and to make sure that all the necessary precautions are taken and no more lives are lost," Mr Melhem said.

"We will conduct our own inquiry to make sure that the safety of our members and their fellow workers is protected to the highest degree possible.

"No new road is worth the cost of a life," he said.
