The AWU's superannuation plan launched on Wednesday at the National Press Club is winning support from influential opinion-makers.

The Sydney Morning Herald has today editorialised on the issue under the headline Super Idea Deserves Support.

The important regional newspaper, The Newcastle Herald, also told its readers they thought the AWU's Tax cut plan is super.

On the morning after the National Press Club speech by Paul Howes, the AWU National Secretary, radio stations across Australia were talking about the idea as an important way to fight the threat of interest rate rises and inflation.

Paul Howes told the National Press Club on Wednesday he was concerned for the wage-packets of the union's 130,000 plus members and their families.

Labor's promised tax cuts during the election-campaign could .be quickly swallowed up by inflation and interest rate rises this year.

The good intent of Labor's election promises have been undermined by inflation induced by the panicky last-minute spending spree of the Howard Government, desperate to hang onto power.

Alan Jones, the highest-rating radio star in Australia, told his breakfast radio listeners yesterday morning, that Paul Howes' speech to the Club made a lot of sense.

Today the venerable Sydney Morning Herald has said much the same thing.

The editorial says the AWU Plan is:" a thoughtful proposal from a major union. It is innovative, economically responsible, anti-inflationary and would most benefit those most in need while boosting Australia's national savings. However, instead of grabbing the idea with both hands, Labor dismissed it."
