AWU National Secretary Bill Shorten says "the national AWU has had a long-standing presence in Sydney, dating back to the earliest years of the union. The new Sydney office strengthens the AWU's effectiveness as a national force, both through our own union networks and through the wider labour movement."

The Sydney office was officially opened on 27 May by Federal Labor parliamentarian and former Federal Industrial Relations Minister Laurie Brereton. Laurie praised the AWU as a strong force in the labour movement, and the AWU's ongoing campaigns to win better wages and conditions for its members. He added that it was vital to maintain the historic links between the union movement and the Labor Party, "a relationship essential to the welfare of all working Australians".
