Can my employer stop me from joining the AWU?

No. If you want to join a union, it is illegal for your employer to try to stop you.

Under the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) Under the Workplace Relations Act 1996 ("WRA"), it is illegal for you employer to stop you from joining a union or the AWU. Equally, it is illegal for employers to discriminate against union members.

If you find yourself in this situation you should immediatley contact your nearest AWU office.
