Your message: (this letter can be changed to suit your individual circumstances)	I write to you in support of the members of the Australian Workers� Union employed by Boeing at the Williamtown RAAF Base in Newcastle, New South Wales, who have been undertaking lawful industrial action in furtherance of their claims for a collective certified agreement to cover their wages and employment conditions. As specialist aircraft maintenance engineers working on the upgrade of the RAAF�s F/A-18 Hornet jet fighters, these men and women form an integral part of Australia�s defence infrastructure, which is charged with the protection of Australia�s democratic institutions and principles. As citizens of Australia, these men and women are entitled to the representation of a union such as the AWU. Furthermore, these AWU members are entitled to negotiate a collective certified agreement with Boeing, if they so choose. Much has been said recently by the federal government about the rights of Australians to choose to have a union negotiated certified agreement with their employer. These AWU members have that right, which Boeing is denying them by refusing to enter into any negotiations with their chosen industrial representatives. Australia is a signatory to various United Nations conventions enshrining the human right of workers to belong to a union and to negotiate collectively. The federal government should be doing everything within its power to ensure that these internationally recognised rights are upheld within the context of this dispute, and that workers such as these do not have to undertake protracted industrial action without recourse to effective intervention by an independent tribunal such as the Australian Industrial Relations Commission. More importantly, Boeing is a multinational company that employs many thousands of workers throughout the United States, Victoria and New South Wales on collective certified agreements. Nothing makes these AWU members any different. I urge you to do everything within your power to help resolve this dispute by encouraging Boeing to sit down at the negotiating table with the AWU and its members and reaching a collectively negotiated certified agreement. To do anything less would be a betrayal of the fundamental democratic rights of these workers whilst they are repeatedly assured by public officials of high office that they have those very rights.
