Boeing takes image hit over dispute

By ABC

Boeing Australia has admitted its image has been tarnished by the long-running dispute at its aircraft maintenance base near Newcastle in New South Wales.

The maintenance employees are now back on full pay and will be reintegrated into the workforce after undergoing some training.

The employees decision to end the strike cames after the state IRC ruled it had the power to resolve the dispute.

Boeing disagreed and will challenge the ruling in the federal IRC.

Boeing spokesman Steve Parker says he is pleased the strike is over but acknowledges it has done some major corporate damage.

"Certainly, there's been some brand damage, it doesn't help when you have banners up degrading some of the Boeing name," he said.

Prime Minister John Howard says he is delighted that striking Boeing employees are returning to work.

"I just think it's good because I don't like seeing people on strike, I don't like seeing families affected and I think commonsense has prevailed," he said.
