Home Campaigns Support the Newcastle Boeing Workers News
American Workers Horrified by Treatment of Australian ColleaguesNewcastle Boeing workers in dispute with their employer have visited their American colleagues on the picket line.Mechanical engineers Adam Burgoyne and Adam Szady, together with AWU National Secretary Bill Shorten, have visited picket lines outside major Boeing plants in Everett and Renton, Seattle. Mr Shorten said the American workers were "horrified to hear that Boeing in Australia refuses point blank to accept the right of its workers to be represented by a union in discussions about wages and conditions". "Our American friends said they've always thought of Australia as a relatively fair place, but we explained to them that workers' rights at home are increasingly under threat." Mr Shorten said the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents 18,400 Boeing machinists across Portland, Oregon and Seattle who are on strike for better conditions, had pledged their solid support for the Newcastle workers. Mr Shorten said the AWU delegation had later held strategy meetings with senior members of the IAM in Washington.
