Boeing Dispute Update 6

After weeks of exposure through local and national media, members of the AWU at the picket line in Newcastle have now been bolstered by international support from other aviation workers.

The International Metalworkers' Federation (to which the AWU is affiliated) has offered its assistance by exposing the industrial tactics of Boeing through its website and urging its affiliates in the United States and Canada to put maximum pressure on Boeing internationally (go to http://www.imfmetal.org/main/index.cfm?n=47&l=2&c=12017)

The IMF is also organising an email campaign from amongst its international membership, targeting Prime Minister John Howard, Ministers Kevin Andrews and Robert Hill, federal member for Paterson Bob Baldwin, Boeing Australia Managing Director David Gray and Boeing CEO and Chairman W. James McNerney.

The "Where is Bob Baldwin MP?" campaign is also showing early signs of success, with the federal member writing to Minister Kevin Andrews in response to the pressure placed on him by AWU members in Newcastle.

The AWU maintains its open invitation to Bob Baldwin to come down to the picket line and speak directly with AWU members, rather than conducting his "consultation" with workers that cross the picket line every day.

KIM BEAZLEY VISIT AND SUPPORT GREATLY APPRECIATED

Federal Labor Leader Kim Beazley made a welcome visit to the AWU picket line late last month in a show of tremendous support from the ALP.

Kim spent an hour and a-half talking to AWU members, their partners and kids about their industrial issues, and the fact that as Australian citizens they should have the right to strong union protection and collective bargaining.

Kim also committed a future Labor government to removing the unfair legislation that John Howard introduced in 1996, and ensuring that the Australian Industrial Relations Commission will have the power to resolve issues such as this without the need for union members to go on strike.

On behalf of all AWU members, we thank Kim and other federal, state and local ALP parliamentarians and representatives for their continued support in this industrial tussle.
