Boeing Dispute Update 2

AWU members at Boeing Williamtown were yesterday addressed by AWU National Secretary Bill Shorten over their efforts to secure a collective certified agreement for better wages and improved working conditions.

The meeting was well attended and members should feel proud of the fact that issues relating to the campaign for a fairer deal were dealt with in a positive, constructive and informed manner. There were a lot of good ideas and issues that were raised in the meeting and the resolutions that were unanimously passed are testament to that.

It's worth remembering a number of points that Bill, Kevin, John and Richard made at the meeting:

1. Boeing are a huge multinational company with annual revenue of over US$52 billion;
2. Boeing employ over 159,000 employees throughout 67 countries;
3. A number of senior Boeing management have recently been embroiled in scandal (eg. Harry Stonecipher and Phil Condit);
4. Boeing paid US$72.5 million to settle a sex discrimination class action and a further US$18.7 million to settle a racial discrimination class action.

AWU members employed by Boeing form an integral part of Australia's national security infrastructure, which is charged with the defence of Australia's way of life, including our democratic right to belong to a union. Keep these things in your mind when Boeing refuses to deal with you through the AWU - it is hypocrisy at its corporate best!

RESOLTIONS UNANIMOUSLY PASSED AT STOP-WORK MEETING FOR FURTHER ACTION

AWU members passed a number of important resolutions at the stop-work meeting held at Williamtown yesterday.

As of today, the AWU has formally notified Boeing and the AIRC of the intention of AWU members to undertake a ban and/or limitation on the filling out of timesheets relating to work performed on site as from Wednesday, 11 May 2005.

Further notices will be issued to Boeing and the AIRC regarding the other resolutions at appropriate times over the next few weeks.
